Unveiling the Depths of Poetry -Jahirah Archibald

Hey Readers, welcome back to another read.Today will be very interesting as I will Give you some insight of what I learnt on the topic “ Poetry”.

In our recent online class on poetry, our lecturer took a unique approach by using a Jam board to categorize students into "Lovers of Poetry" and "Non-Lovers of Poetry." It was a thought-provoking exercise that required us to articulate our stance. This sparked my interest and I quickly identified myself as a Lover of Poetry. I found myself comfortably declaring my love for poetry, citing my fondness for humorous poems that painted vivid images in my mind.

As the discussion unfolded, the lecturer delved into our experiences with teaching poetry. While I admitted to having limited experience, I shared my attempt to incorporate poems into Language Arts lessons.  We delved into analyzing a poem"The Sea" by James Reeves exploring the  rhyme scheme and literary devices. Little did I know that this class would expand my understanding of poetry

The poetry workshop continued in a face-to-face setting, where the lecturer introduced various poem types— "I am... Poems," list poems, free verse, wish poems, and more. The exploration reached a high point with a demonstration of a poem of two voices, a personal favorite. Dividing the class into two groups, we read the lines simultaneously, creating a harmonious duet that brought the words to life.

What struck me most was the revelation that poems possess rhyme schemes and the myriad poetic devices like alliteration, metaphor, and simile. The experience of reading "The Flattered Flying Fish" further emphasized the importance of expression and emotion in bringing poems to life. The narrator, the flying fish and the shark each added a unique dimension to the poem, making me realize the richness of poetry beyond the written words.

This class transformed my perception of poetry. I now understand that it is not merely about words on a page but a dynamic art form that engages the senses and emotions. The detailed exploration of rhyme schemes, poem types, and poetic devices has equipped me with valuable tools for future teaching endeavors.

As I reflect on this journey through the world of poetry, I am filled with awe at its depth and intricacies. The insights gained from this class will undoubtedly shape my approach to teaching poetry in the classroom. I am excited to share the newfound knowledge and passion with my students, fostering a love for poetry that goes beyond the surface and into the heart of this enchanting art form.

Reading your blog, I seen you have gained an interest in poetry and that is great because as you have a love for something you will put you best foot forward. As you continue your teaching journey incorporating poetry into your Language Arts lessons is a great idea. Do not limit it to just Language Arts but I'm sure it can be integrated into different subject areas. Thank you for sharing.
