View of being a teacher of writing - Adwon Carty

Before becoming an educator of writing, I once believed that writing was only for educational and boring puropses. This view chsnged as I attended the classes for the course "Promoting Writing in the Primary Grades". From this course i gained the theoretical, practical and resources to motivate and guide emergent writers as they embark on their writing journey.

Throughout this course, there are several factors that illuminated writing not just as a task but as an avenue of creativity and expression.

One of the first aspects of we were guided by was the writing process and its relationship to the 6+1 traits of writing .

Writing Process: Pre-Writing, Drafting, Revising, Editing and Piblishing.

6+1 Traits of Writing: Idea, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions + Presentation.

These writing frameworks and guides serves as strong protocols and guidelines in which writiers of the emergent of novice levels are able to use. These framworks can be used for assessemnt or use as a guide to iaaid stud ets in the writing development process. These two concepts are nkw apart of my writing arsenal to help students and others develop their writing abilities.

The variations of literacy genres and their signficance was apart of this course. The knowledge of the different genres were not as detailed as I have acquired now after completing this course. Gaining this knowledge of the literacy genres, will allow me as a teacher of writing to foster a climate sutiable for writing and birth a love for the art. This course has granted me an opportunity to go travel beyond the foundation of writing but to inspire students to be lovers of writing in their own personal style and ge re of choice.

This course also included pratcial examples and real-life situations and techniques with theoretical backing to make writing instruction more interactive and engaging. I have learned to encourage  students to own their work, have a sense of achievement, activly engage with their audience and see writing as a path beyond the classroom.

In conclusion "Promoting Writing in the Primary Grades" has changed my perspective on writing. Thjs course guided mein acquiring an manuals that integrates the writing process, the seven traits of writing, and a potfolio of literarcy genres. This course has impacted my theology of teaching writing as an educator, and I am excited to implement the nes techniques and strategies to our new and developing writers.

How I Feel About the Teaching of Writing -Jahirah Archibald

Hey guys! Welcome back. This is my reflection of the Teaching of Writing.

As I sit down to reflect on the recent series of blog posts delving into the art and science of teaching writing in the classroom, I find myself filled with ideas, lessons and a newfound appreciation   of pedagogy and creativity. The exploration of the writing process, the symbiotic relationship between the writing process and the 6+1 traits, the various types of writing including narrative, persuasive, poetry etc. and the essential task of creating a conducive climate for writing has left a lasting mark on my teaching journey.
Before I learned so much about the details of how to teach writing, I used my own experiences and gut feelings more. I've learned that gut is useful, but an organized understanding of the writing process can help both teachers and students find their way through the maze of words and ideas.

During this journey, it became clear how the writing process and the 6+1 traits fit together, like pieces of a literary puzzle fitting together. It's not enough to just write; you have to make sure that your work has its own style while still following the rules of good writing. Finding the right mix between individuality and tradition, creativity and order, is an art that seems more real and easy to teach now.

Learning about the different kinds of writing was like entering new worlds. From the deep worlds of stories to the persuasion of speech to the heartfelt statements of poems, each type of writing opened up a wide range of options for me and my students. It reminded me that writing is not a single thing, but a bunch of different styles.

As one of the blog pieces talked about, making an environment for writing was a discovery in and of itself. To make writing fun, it's not enough to have the right tools or a nice-looking classroom. You need to create a culture that values writing. The classroom should be a safe place where people can share their thoughts and where mistakes can be used as learning opportunities.

Looking forward, the future of teaching writing feels promising. Now that I know more about the writing process, get along well with the 6+1 traits and have a lot of writing skills for different types of writing, I can't wait to lead my students on their own writing adventures. The world is very big and there are a lot of options.

In conclusion, this exploration of teaching writing has been a transformative experience. It's not just about imparting knowledge; it's about nurturing a love for expression, empowering students to wield the pen as a tool for both self-discovery and communication. As I continue on this journey, I carry with me the lessons from the past, the insights I have gained in the present, and the hope that one day every student will be able to share a story with great skills on their own.

Unveiling the Depths of Poetry -Jahirah Archibald

Hey Readers, welcome back to another read.Today will be very interesting as I will Give you some insight of what I learnt on the topic “ Poetry”.

In our recent online class on poetry, our lecturer took a unique approach by using a Jam board to categorize students into "Lovers of Poetry" and "Non-Lovers of Poetry." It was a thought-provoking exercise that required us to articulate our stance. This sparked my interest and I quickly identified myself as a Lover of Poetry. I found myself comfortably declaring my love for poetry, citing my fondness for humorous poems that painted vivid images in my mind.

As the discussion unfolded, the lecturer delved into our experiences with teaching poetry. While I admitted to having limited experience, I shared my attempt to incorporate poems into Language Arts lessons.  We delved into analyzing a poem"The Sea" by James Reeves exploring the  rhyme scheme and literary devices. Little did I know that this class would expand my understanding of poetry

The poetry workshop continued in a face-to-face setting, where the lecturer introduced various poem types— "I am... Poems," list poems, free verse, wish poems, and more. The exploration reached a high point with a demonstration of a poem of two voices, a personal favorite. Dividing the class into two groups, we read the lines simultaneously, creating a harmonious duet that brought the words to life.

What struck me most was the revelation that poems possess rhyme schemes and the myriad poetic devices like alliteration, metaphor, and simile. The experience of reading "The Flattered Flying Fish" further emphasized the importance of expression and emotion in bringing poems to life. The narrator, the flying fish and the shark each added a unique dimension to the poem, making me realize the richness of poetry beyond the written words.

This class transformed my perception of poetry. I now understand that it is not merely about words on a page but a dynamic art form that engages the senses and emotions. The detailed exploration of rhyme schemes, poem types, and poetic devices has equipped me with valuable tools for future teaching endeavors.

As I reflect on this journey through the world of poetry, I am filled with awe at its depth and intricacies. The insights gained from this class will undoubtedly shape my approach to teaching poetry in the classroom. I am excited to share the newfound knowledge and passion with my students, fostering a love for poetry that goes beyond the surface and into the heart of this enchanting art form.
